A SHARED JOURNEY
Following Jesus was never meant to be a solitary journey.
From the beginning, God has formed a people rather than isolated individuals. He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden, journeyed with Israel through the wilderness, dwelt among humanity in Jesus Christ, and continues to accompany His people through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Throughout Scripture, God is revealed as the One who comes near.
A CoJourner is someone who joins that movement.
Not an expert with all the answers.
Not merely a teacher or facilitator.
A companion who walks beside others as they learn to follow Jesus.
WHAT IS A COJOURNER?
A fellow traveler.
A CoJourner is a fellow traveler who cultivates environments where people can encounter God, inhabit His Story, cultivate Christlike lives, and become companions for others.
- Rather than leading from a distance, CoJourners lead from among the people.
- Rather than creating followers of themselves, they point people toward Jesus.
- Rather than measuring success by attendance or information transfer, they seek lives increasingly rooted in Christ and flourishing within His kingdom.
In The Garden Project, leadership is understood as accompaniment. We journey together because Christ first journeyed with us.
THE POSTURE OF A COJOURNER
Jesus rarely hurried people.
He walked with fishermen.
He shared meals with sinners.
He asked questions before giving answers.
He explained the Scriptures while walking a dusty road to Emmaus, allowing confused disciples to discover that their hearts had been burning within them all along.
This is the posture of a CoJourner. We do not force growth. We cultivate the conditions in which God brings growth.
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”

Our role is faithfulness. Growth belongs to God.

02 · ORIENTATION
Illuminate & guide.
We help people discover their place within God’s Story. Through Scripture, thoughtful questions, and faithful conversation, we continually reorient one another toward Christ.

03 · CULTIVATION
Tend & nurture.
Like gardeners, we patiently tend the soil while trusting God to produce life. We encourage spiritual practices, community, worship, prayer, service, and faithful obedience, knowing that formation is a lifelong work of the Holy Spirit.

04 · MULTIPLICATION
Plant another CoJourner.
Healthy disciples naturally become companions for others. Just as a seed grows into a tree that bears fruit and produces more seed, disciples become disciple-makers who continue God’s work across generations.
“Entrust these things to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.”

LEADERSHIP AS CULTIVATION
Gardeners cultivate, but God gives the growth.
Throughout Planted., participants discover that Scripture begins in a garden and ends in a garden-city. This imagery shapes our understanding of leadership as well.
Gardeners cannot manufacture life. They prepare the soil. Plant the seed. Water faithfully. Pull weeds. Wait patiently. Celebrate growth.
A CoJourner serves in much the same way. We cannot transform hearts; only the Holy Spirit can do that. Our calling is simply to remain faithful in cultivating places where people can encounter the living God.
ALWAYS BOTH FOLLOWING AND INVITING
No one ever graduates from being a CoJourner.
Every disciple is always both following and inviting.
Always learning and teaching.
Always being formed while helping form others.
We remain companions because we ourselves continue to journey with Christ. As we walk together through God’s Story, we discover that discipleship is not merely about arriving somewhere. It is about faithfully walking with Jesus, and helping others do the same.
